Professor Sakai Visit “Fine-Blend”

For engineers engaged in plastic modification,Twin Screw Extrusion Machine(TSE)is one of the most familiar equipments. We can obtain specific phase structure and functionalized polymer components by formula design and the optimization of process parameters. However, what happened during the processing in TSE maybe still a “mystery”.

And recently, we feel much honored to have invited Professor Sakai, who is a famous specialist in plastic modification industry, to reveal the “mystery” of phase evolution during the processing in TSE. And we also talked about the graft copolymerization of polyolefin by melt-blending process used with TSE.

In the morning, Professor Sakai used almost 3 hours to reveal the phase evolution during the processing in TSE. Large amounts of cases were used to reveal the dynamic dispersion processes and a general rule which is suitable for most of the two components blending system were also revealed. At last, the theories by using specific parameters to predict the particle diameters were also introduced by Professor Sakai.

After a short rest at noon,Professor Sakai introduced us the graft copolymerization of polyolefin by melt-blending process used with TSE. A large amount of cases were used to reveal the general rule of polyolefin fictionalizations and the improving direction. Many problems encountered during the development and production were also get patiently answer by Professor Sakai.

Dr. Tadamoto Sakai’s Resume:

Prof. Tadamoto Sakai has long experience for developing various polymer processing equipment such as twin screw extruders and injection molding machines as a R&D Director of Japan Steel Works (JSW) and obtained Doctor Degree from Hokkaido University on twin screw extrusion technology. He was awarded a Distiguished Achievement in Reactive Extrusion technology from Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology in Japan. He worked as Visiting Prof. at Kyoto University, Tokyo University and Shanghai Jio Tong University, and is now Visiting Prof. of Shizuoka University. He was Past President of Japan Society of Polymer Processing (JSPP) and International Polymer Processing Society (PPS). Now he is Fellow of SPE (USA), Society of Polymer Science, JSPP and JSW. He published more than 200 technical papers, 300 speeches at International Conference and 40 books such as “Mixing and Compounding of Polymers” from Hanser in 2009.
